Thioctic (alpha-lipoic) acid is an endogenous antioxidant with direct (binding free radicals) and indirect (promoting restoration of intracellular glutathione levels and increasing activity of superoxide dismutase) effect.
It helps reduce plasma glucose levels and increase liver glycogen levels, as well as overcome insulin resistance. Its biochemical effect is similar to that of the B vitamins.
It participates in regulation of carbohydrate and lipid metabolism and stimulates cholesterol metabolism.
Thioctic (alpha-lipoic) acid has hepatoprotective, lipid-lowering, hypocholesterolemic, and hypoglycemic effects. It improves neuronal trophism.
